JOB OPENING CNMS Postdoctoral Scholar Synthetic and Bio-Inspired Macromolecular Materials Synthesis and Characterization of Block Copolymers There is an immediate opening for three postdoctoral research scholars in the synthesis and characterization of block copolymers. These are expected to be two-year appointment with the possibility of extension. This position reports to the leaders of the Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Macromolecular Materials area in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory / Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) user-initiated nanoscience research program. The incumbents will design, synthesize, and characterize block copolymers synthesized by anionic and controlled radical polymerization techniques. The incumbents are expected to divide their time between pursuit of world-class research consistent with the goals of the CNMS, establish and maintain their facilities, and support and collaborate with users. More information about the CNMS can be found at http://cnms.ornl.gov/ DUTIES: Perform research in the design, synthesis, self-assembly, and characterization of complex macromolecular architectures to achieve novel functionality. Develop user facilities for anionic polymerization and characterization of block copolymers, provide scientific support for facilities users in macromolecular synthesis and characterization including the design, synthesis and characterization of deuterated monomers and polymers. Train users to operate equipment as needed, and provide timely technical support. Ensure efficient use of facilities by coordinating scheduling with users and CNMS staff. Participate with other scientists in developing new methodologies and instrumentation. Participate in the design, and implementation of collaborative experiments with users and CNMS staff. Prepare scientific data for publication in refereed journals and for presentation at scientific meetings. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (within last 4 years) in organic or polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, or polymer physics. Expertise in controlled/living polymerizations, block copolymers, polymer characterization, and organic synthesis is required. Individuals with expertise in synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites (polymer/carbon nanotube or polymer/inorganic) and bio- inspired macromolecules are desirable. Ability to conduct creative and independent research required. Applicants should have excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues. Record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals. Applicants should send a complete CV and publication list, a statement of research interests, and the names and addresses of at least three references, to Dr. Phillip F. Britt ([email protected]) or Dr. Jimmy Mays ([email protected]), Chemical Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, PO Box 2008, Oak Ridge, TN 37831- 6197. Applications sent as e-mail attachments (MS Word or PDF files) are requested. Academic transcripts are not required at this time but will be needed later. This position is available immediately but applications will be accepted until Jan. 15, 2004 or until the position is filled. The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a collaborative nanoscience user research facility for the synthesis, characterization, theory/modeling/simulation, and design of nanoscale materials that is being established by the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). ORNL, a multiprogram research facility managed by UT- Battelle, LLC, for the DOE, is an equal opportunity employer committed to building and maintaining a diverse work force. This appointment is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens who currently work in the U.S and are available for interview, without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran. The ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associate Program is administered by ORNL and Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE). |
