Abstract
The seminar will describe studies in which carbon nanotube/polymer nanocomposites can be used to create effective hole transporting layers in Perovskite based solar cells which allow the replacement of the large molecule SPIRO-OMetaD and generate improved durability and lifetime. Graphene can also be introduced into the electron transporting layers which also produces improved processability and performance and opens the route to extensive use of carbon based electrodes in these materials. Novel spectroscopy of the basic perovskite materials will also be described which uses advanced magneto-optical spectroscopy to make the first accurate determination of the exciton binding energy in Perovskites which is found to be substantially smaller than has frequently been assumed.

Biography
Prof. Nicholas is one of the pioneers of Low Dimensional Semiconductor research, initially working on III-V semiconductor heterostructures. In work on the optical properties of semiconducting carbon nanotubes he discovered how to use semiconducting polymers to form a new class of high purity self-assembling, one-dimensional nanostructures by wrapping the nanotubes in a polymer using simple solution processing. The family of polymer nanohybrids that he has developed is contributing to a new generation of photovoltaic cells which are being actively studied world-wide with efficiencies already achieved of over 15%. In work on single flake monolayer graphene he made the first measurements of the Dirac velocity. He has also studied the quantum Hall effect in graphene and shown that quantum Hall behavior persists up to remarkably high current densities, temperatures and low magnetic fields so that this material is now being adopted as the universal resistance standard. He is now investigating use of graphene flakes as part of the electrode materials for a variety of different PV devices. Prof Nicholas has a very extensive international reputation and was until recently chairman of the IUPAP semiconductor physics commission. He has been chairman of the Semiconductor Physics groups for both the UK Institute of Physics and the European Physical Society.
